Goldie Hawn—Honorary Values Gal February 2012
Actress, producer, dancer, mother and luminary, radiating happiness and wisdom at every turn, Goldie Hawn has captivated fans for decades and still continues to be a shining light. But her effervescence was not always easy. From the age of 3, Goldie Hawn knew she was going to be a dancer. When she began to get acting parts and the idea of the life of a dancer slipped farther and farther away, she became depressed… and a lifelong exploration of happiness and following her inner guide ensued. She discovered she was so concretized in the idea of the future she had imagined that she ended up encaged. As she learned, we must allow for left and right turns that open us to possibilities and inform who we are in life. Who Goldie is in life is a woman of values, ethics and laughter. Meet our February Honorary Values Gal.
Happiness—As early as 11 years of age, Hawn was very clear about the kind of life she wanted to live. Her singular intention was to be happy. To that end, she has been true. Author Dan Buettner cites, "Goldie Hawn is arguably the most influential happiness expert of our time. She not only has achieved true happiness in her life, but radiates it in her family and through the work of her foundation [MindUP].” Hawn started earnestly pursuing research on happiness, particularly as it pertains to children, after 9/11. With increasing suicide, dropout and depression rates among young people, she wanted to learn and help parents and teachers “bring optimism back into the classroom.” Through her foundation, Hawn has designed tools to help create the best environments for children’s happiness. The secret to raising happy children is to be happy, she says. Children mirror who you are.
Accountability— Always hold on to your integrity, she advises. As a young auditioning actress, she knew instinctively to stay away from the casting couch. Follow your voice. Hold on to your values and ethics, she says. Indeed, she defines herself by her ethics, her truth, and her ability to give and understand, not by her awards.
Love—Love, she says, includes learning to let go. Mothers let their daughters go so they can become whole. Watch them, of course, but honor them and let them go. Love is also a daily choice. After two failed marriages, she’s been with Kurt Russell for 30+ years. And it works. She’s not trapped in a marriage, but she likes having someone in her life who she’s responsible for being her best to and vice versa. They choose to love each other and be there everyday.
Gratitude—Researchers have demonstrated tranquility, empathy, gratitude, and focused attention open the brain like a flower in bloom to help relieve stress, anxiety, boredom, and unhappiness. Goldie practices gratitude throughout each day, expressing thanks. The practice of gratitude, she says, has gotten people out of their depression beds.
Self-respect—Above all: let your true self shine. Don’t conform to what everyone else may be doing or how they may be doing it. Follow your inner guide. That’s how she found and has lived her truest path. Use your wisdom to grow. When your wonder stops, then you die.
